DHA and pregnancy benefits

DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid. Maternal DHA intake contributes to the normal brain and eye development of the foetus and breastfed infants [1]. Studies have shown that maternal DHA intake during pregnancy is linked to better cognitive development in infants[2]. In one study of 29 women, higher DHA intake was associated with improved problem-solving in children at 9 months[3].

how much DHA during pregnancy is recommended?

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recommends that adults consume at least 250 mg of combined DHA and EPA daily, with pregnant women requiring an additional 100–200 mg of DHA on top of this general recommendation [4]. An extensive review of over 50 studies indicates that daily supplementation of 600–1,000 mg of DHA omega-3 during pregnancy is effective[5].

when should I start taking omega-3 during pregnancy?

While EFSA is yet to provide specific recommendations on the best time to take omega-3 during pregnancy, an extensive review of 51 studies found that additional supplementation should preferably begin in the second trimester of pregnancy and continue until approximately 37 weeks’ of foetus development or until childbirth if before 37 weeks[5].

is Omega-3 safe during pregnancy?

Yes, omega-3 supplementation is considered safe during pregnancy. Health authorities such as the EFSA recommend omega-3 during pregnancy, and a study on 250 women found that daily supplementation of 600 mg of DHA from 20 weeks of foetal development until birth was well-tolerated for both mothers and newborns[6].
